Introduction
If you are a Mandarin speaker, you probably have heard of the saying "there is no such thing as a free lunch".
- Well, this holds lots of truth, because life is so real that we all need to earn money for a living.
While the internet provides a wealth of information, we are hardly able to differentiate the true motive of the contents or if there is any possibility of cherry picking with evidence.
- Comparatively, subscription-based, evidence-based clinical resources (e.g. UpToDate, DynaMed, BMJ Best Practice) are generally more trustworthy than user-generated content, such as Wikipedia.
Knowledge is Not Free
For healthcare professionals, accessibility of information is power because it can affect our clinical decision making.
- In fact, we do not have to memorise all dosing information or know every disease on the Earth, as long as we have reliable resources to find the answer.
As a civilized people with integrity, supporting authors by buying original copies should be encouraged as copyright infringement is unethical. However, the harsh reality of limited salary can make it difficult to afford our favourite books.
