The arms race over cancer care in Massachusetts escalated on Tuesday when Mass General Brigham disclosed it will invest $400 million to create a new institute to treat the disease before the health system ends its partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

MGB, the biggest health system in the state, plans to spend the money over the next four years to renovate three floors of the Hale Building at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and one floor of Brigham’s Faulkner Hospital to provide outpatient clinical space.
