Researchers identify new pathway for HIV invasion of cell nucleus

A study published in the journal Nature Communications has identified a new pathway that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) uses to enter the nucleus of a healthy cell, where it can then replicate and go on to invade other cells. The researchers also identified three proteins that are needed for the virus to carry out the invasion and have in turn synthesised molecules (potential drugs) that can target one of the proteins, potentially leading to new treatments for AIDS.

Novartis acquires Chinook Therapeutics for $3.5bn upfront

Stockholders of Chinook will receive $40.00 in cash per share, a total of $3.2bn, from Novartis. Upon achieving certain regulatory milestones, they will further receive $4.00 in cash per share , through a contingent value right (CVR), representing a potential additional $300m in aggregate contingent consideration. In June this year, Novartis signed the agreement to acquire Chinook Therapeutics.
